Actually the software is faster than the matlab environment ,the
personal experience proves scilab faster and consumng less space while matlab consumes 3gb+,scilab takes only 30mb+. ON TOP OF IT IT'S FREE, OPEN SOURCE AND COMES UP WITH MULTIPAL TOOL BOXES AND PLUGINES

Actually , SciLab is slower than MATLAB, but it is free.
You can examine peformance comparisons here.
In general, MATLAB has been faster when tested in 1999, 2002 and 2008.
